Last week the Sullivans Gulch Trail supporters, and other trail groups testified on the proposed Bicycle Master Plan in front of the Portland Planning Commission. Our committee has spent the last several weeks reviewing the draft plan, meeting with concerned groups and advocates in the region, and we have developed our comments on the plan. Today we are sending these comments out asking that trails be recognized the best bicycle transportation tool we have for getting more riders out on their bikes. The draft plan suffers from two problems:
Recent budgets have been difficult, no doubt. But if we limit the vision we have for 2030 to what we can pay for in 2010 we are severely limiting our future. Hard choices will have to be made, and some amazing surprises will likely happen in finding new revenue over the next 20 years. We can't know what these are yet, so we shouldn't limit what we hope for. Lets plan for the best, and see what we can do as a community. Trails will be a critical component to our future. Research has shown that in order to get the next big segment of the population on their bikes we need to make them feel safe. Many of our neighbors simply will not be comfortable on the road, no matter how much engineering goes into sharing it with cars. Only a trails can provide the safety and comfort many need to make bikes a part of their daily lives. Trails will provide the backbone for an amazing network of bicycle routes around the city. Making travel faster, easier and safer. Please take the time to review our comments and submit your own. The deadline to submit comments to the city is November 8, 2009.
